What is Artery Angioplasty?

Artery angioplasty, also known as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), is a minimally invasive procedure designed to open narrowed or blocked arteries. This procedure helps restore normal blood flow to areas affected by arterial blockages, such as the heart.

How is Artery Angioplasty Done?

  1. Preparation:
    • The patient is given local anesthesia and possibly a mild sedative.
    • The surgical site, usually the groin or arm, is cleaned and prepared.
  2. Insertion of Catheter:
    • A small incision is made at the surgical site.
    • A thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into the artery and guided to the site of the blockage using X-ray imaging.
  3. Balloon Inflation:
    • Once the catheter reaches the blocked artery, a small balloon at the catheter’s tip is inflated.
    • The inflation of the balloon compresses the plaque against the artery walls, widening the artery and restoring blood flow.
  4. Stent Placement (if needed):
    • Often, a stent (a small wire mesh tube) is placed in the artery during the procedure.
    • The stent helps keep the artery open after the balloon is deflated and the catheter is removed.
  5. Completion:
    • The balloon is deflated and the catheter is removed.
    • The incision site is closed, and a pressure bandage is applied to prevent bleeding.

Recovery After Artery Angioplasty

  • Hospital Stay: Most patients can go home the same day or the day after the procedure.
  • Activity Restrictions: Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities for a few days.
  • Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the patient’s recovery and the success of the procedure.
  • Medication: Patients may need to take medications to prevent blood clots and manage risk factors like high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
